Toward
World Unity?

Long
ago, the world was essentially made up of small city states.
But already thousands of years ago, a number of countries merged
into China. Much later, others formed a federal USA. Now, some
visionaries share the same dream for Europe. A unification which
could have occurred already 2,000 years ago under the Romans.

Others
oppose it. But evolution is normal,
in society as in biology.
Today nobody questions a united America or China. In the future,
nobody will question a federal Europe either. As with any changes
(currencies, languages, symbols, etc.) it only feels wrong for those
alive at the time of the change. Not for their grandkids.

Uniting
the Earth is harder, despite more globalization. But
lately,
the entire civilized world (including
USA,
Europe, Russia & China)
has actually moved closer, as it has been facing the
same enemy:
extremists opposing the values and ideals of modern society.

Couldn't
we use this shared interest to grow even closer? Instead
of competing, we could for example use our respective military
strength to form joint anti-missile/anti-terror systems. Perhaps
this would be a faster road to world unity, than lengthy UN talks.
